VP Sweepstakes - the Veepstakes

So, at this point, so close to the nominating conventions...I am interested in the political calculus that goes on in selecting a VP candidate, vetting him or her, keeping the pick secret, and rolling the pick out. I am almost more interested in the whole process than I am interested in any particular choice.

My money is on 1) Obama / Biden and 2) McCain / Lieberman. We should learn of the pick in the next few days!

For details in how the campaigns are manipulating media interest in this process, check out this column by Chris Cizzilla of the Washington Post.

Not surprisingly...Daily Show is trusted source for the news.

From the NY Times:

"...the Comedy Central program — which is not above using silly sight gags and sophomoric sex jokes to get a laugh — has earned a devoted following that regards the broadcast as both the smartest, funniest show on television and a provocative and substantive source of news. “The Daily Show” resonates not only because it is wickedly funny but also because its keen sense of the absurd is perfectly attuned to an era in which cognitive dissonance has become a national epidemic. Indeed, Mr. Stewart’s frequent exclamation “Are you insane?!” seems a fitting refrain for a post-M*A*S*H, post-“Catch-22” reality, where the surreal and outrageous have become commonplace — an era kicked off by the wacko 2000 election standoff in Florida, rocked by the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11 and haunted by the fallout of a costly war waged on the premise of weapons of mass destruction that did not exist."

USC gets jock itch...really!!!

This is the first time I have heard this. Tailback Joe McKnight and receiver Travon Patterson were sufficiently afflicted to spend Wednesday's practice on the sideline.

"It burns," Patterson said.

Hints toward's McCain's Choice

So there are hints at McCain's choice of a VP. My money is on Lieberman, who seems happy to betray the Democratic Party right in the middle of a presidential election.

Stanford - a working class team in Palo Alto?

Jim Harbaugh, the former Michigan quarterback (and current Stanford head coach) plans to turn the tide at Stanford by intimating that his players are "working class." Apparently at Stanford, to be working class all you need is an actual blue collar shirt with your name on a patch in the front. This from a University that charges approximately $34,000 per year in tuition for its undergraduates.

UPDATE: Turns out Stanford doesn't charge tuition to poor kids. Hmmm. Hard to criticize that.

Far Right Shrinking?

God I hope so. It looks like the days of republican dominance are over. Did Bush do this? Or is this a broader demographic phenomena?

Far Right Repudiated

Greg Anrig writes in the Wash Post: "But now, seemingly all of a sudden, conservatives are the ones who are tongue-tied, as demonstrated by Sen. John McCain's limping, message-free presidential campaign."

Are we, progressive Democrats, now the party of ideas?
